The opening lines of Git's original README, written by Linus Torvalds on April 7, 2005 — the first commit (e83c5163) of what would become the world's most widely used version control system. Linus wrote Git in about ten days after BitKeeper revoked the Linux kernel's free license, and named it after himself — "git" being British slang for an unpleasant or foolish person ("I'm an egotistical bastard, and I name all my projects after myself"). Two decades later, it manages most of the world's software. The original README still describes it as "stupid." Distributed under the GPLv2.
